Denmark and Europe received a new attraction on 7th June, 2000. Three southern Danish tourism development associations, FYNTOUR (Funen), Østdansk Turisme (Lolland-Falster, Møn and South Zealand), and Region Sydøst- og Sønderjylland (South East Jutland), and five counties: Fyns Amt, Storstrøms Amt, Vestsjællands Amt, Vejle Amt and Sønderjyllands Amt, have co-operatively established the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. This co-operation bears the name Bike & Sea Denmark. The theme for the Baltic Sea Cycle Route is its unique placement by the water, the many small ferries to myriad islands, and the charming coastal towns.

The route, a total of 800 km, goes through South East Jutland, Ærø, Langeland, Lolland-Falster, Møn and South Zealand, and returns over the Funen coastal, finally crossing Lillebæltsbroen (the Little Belt bridge) and going down the Jutland east coast. The route, which follows the existing national, regional and local cycling routes, is fully described in a book that can be purchased at the local tourist bureaus (DKK 99,-).

On the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, there is a wide selection of attractions, experiences and accommodation possibilities. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route can be traversed in its entirety or in laps beginning anywhere along the route. In this way, holidays of different lengths are possible, making the route attractive for both families with children and dedicated cycling enthusiasts.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route is Denmark at its best, and is expected to become the "beacon" for Danish cycle tourism, as well as making its mark around Europe in years to come. "We expect to see many Danish and foreign cycle tourists on the route", say the three regional associations. It is hoped that the route will become as popular as the great cycling classics, "Donau Radweg" and "Bodensee Ruten", where more than 100.000 tourists cycle annually.
